- 1886
Karl Benz patents his three-wheeled Benz Patent-Motorwagen, widely seen as the first petrol-powered car.
- 1901
Daimler builds the Mercedes 35 hp, named after Mercedes Jellinek, daughter of the dealer who ordered it.
- 1926
Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft and Benz & Cie. merge, and the Mercedes-Benz name is born.
- 1954
The 300 SL "Gullwing" coupé is unveiled in New York, with its upward-opening doors.
- 1959
The W111 "Fintail" saloon arrives with crumple zones front and rear, developed by Béla Barényi.
- 1978
The S-Class becomes one of the first production cars offered with electronic anti-lock brakes (ABS).
- 1982
The compact 190 (W201) saloon goes on sale, opening up a new, smaller Mercedes.
- 1993
The model range moves to letter classes, starting with the first C-Class.
